Intraoperative Radiotherapy for Breast Cancer Treatment: New Technology Makes Treatment More Convenient For Women Undergoing Lumpectomy for Invasive Breast Cancer.

Los Angeles—The USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center has joined the Targit Trial, an international multicenter clinical trial evaluating Single-dose Intraoperative Radiotherapy as an alternative to conventional post-operative radiotherapy for treatment of early stage invasive breast cancer. With Intraoperative Radiotherapy, women undergoing breast conserving surgery (lumpectomy) may receive their radiotherapy at the time of their breast cancer operation while still under anesthesia, completely replacing the need for a 6-7 week course of radiotherapy normally given after surgery. According to Dennis R. Holmes, M.D., Breast Surgeon and USC Targit Trial Principal Investigator, “Intraoperative Radiotherapy is a tremendous advancement in our on-going effort to improve the quality of breast cancer treatment as well as reduce that impact that these treatments have on women’s lives.

The Targit Trial is an Institutional Review Board approved clinical trial conducted by Dennis R. Holmes, M.D. in conjunction with Radiation Oncologist, Oscar Streeter, M.D. Intraoperative Radiotherapy takes just 20-35 minutes to administer and replaces 6-7 weeks of daily visits to the hospital for post-operative radiotherapy. Intraoperative Radiotherapy permits women to complete their cancer treatments sooner, allowing them a quicker return to their normal lives.”
